I've recently started rolling Vanguards and I've been raped in all sorts of ways.
What really pisses me off is enemy aircraft. All they need to do is hover above you and shoot their stupidly overpowered A2G missiles and melt your shit in a second. Is there even a way to deal with enemy aircraft? I feel naked against them. All I do is roll, look around, shoot, fail, die, repeat.

And I don't think the shield will do any difference

The level 1 Vanguard shield can protect you about half a clip / almost a full clip of rocketpods, if you time the usage right.

However, they can just reload, and you're waiting a few years or decades on the shield cooldown, so they have ample time to kill you with another rocket barrage before you can pop the shield again... :pinch:

I like my Vanguard too, so I feel you, man, I feel you - I've been asking should I get better AA weapons for my Vanguard or what would be the answer against this...

Just try to find hiding places, where Aircraft must come lower and in range .
Having an AA gun on top plus gunner is helpful too . :D

I'd recommend fire suppression, it heals you a little when you're on fire and the cooldown is shorter I think

I'd like to hear about your Secondary Guns, what are you using, and what is it good for?
I can't decide which one to pick, and I've seen a few of our guys doing really good with the Vanguard, so I'm sure some of you have a clue about these guns ;)

How do I Vanguard?Halberd is a universal. Not bad. 5 years 3 months ago #582

I have the E540 Halberd, and I love it. :woohoo:

Although many seem to think it as a bad choice...

It's harder to hit with it than the Enforcer which shoots rockets that fly VERY, VERY FAST. Way easier to hit with it.

Here's a bit modified quote about the Enforcer from the PS2 official forums;
The Enforcer hits hard.

Beats the living shit out of parked Sunderers or turrets. Or, if you get the drop on the rear of an enemy tank, one Van HEAT shot + Enforcer shot basically leaves it almost dead. [NOTE; I, HIGHCommanderJack have the AP + Halb, so all I need is a shot of both in the rear and they are dead]

It's really nice in combat which begins at long range, since the projectile speed is so fast. But yeah, in actual tank duels, most of which occur at medium range with both combatants moving? There isn't so much of a difference in Halberd and Enforcer. Easier to hit with the latter, but Halberd is capable of getting rid of enemy infantry also.

There are some NC tankers who pick Halberd and prefer it over the Enforcer. I would say it might be better if you can reliably get good gunners, like if you're in an outfit with people who like to gun for you.

Halberd is more universal type of weapon. Not bad. Not great. There are some NC tankers who see it as the best of two meh choices.

So you lose against Enforcer on long ranges, but if you can close the distance, you will come out as the winner.

I have racer + shield, so I can close the distance fairly easy, and take the few hits they might shoot with the shield, ignoring the damage. Once I'm up "in their face", nothing can beat my AP+Halberd.

You need good gunners to compensate for the harder-to-hit factor of the slower projectile - This isn't a problem in our outfit.

All in all, I see the situation like this;

Want to go tank/lib/ESF hunting? Pick AP+Enf.

Want to go tank/lib/infantry hunting? Pick AP+Halb.

Want to go infantry hunting? Pick HE+Halb.

Want to be the allaround tank? HEAT+Enf.

The AP oneshots an ESF, twoshots a lib, and with the huge projectile speed, you should be able to land these shots especially if they come close.

EDIT: Just checked the tables. Enf vs Halb, with the latter you sacrifice two bars of damage for 4 bars into reload speed. As the battles are usually pretty hectic, I think that this reload speed is a better choice over the higher damage per hit.

best tip for vanguarding, don't go out alone- be in a group. I have the Walker on my tank, been useless until the latest patch, now it is somewhat useful, it will scare off an ESF 9/10

Thanks for the answers, you did quite some work there Jack :woohoo:
I was gunner in a Vanguard with a Walker quite often now. It works good for everything, but you won't get an angle for groundtargets 90% of the time, so it's really just G2A and for some reason I don't get attacked by aircrafts often.

So it's down to Jacks options.
I guess with your recommendation I'll pick the Halberd today. You can always run away from long range fights, usually I get killed by sneaky vehicles or infantry that get close. And the reloadspeed should make a difference.

My 2 cents :)

Tip 1: Get anti-air. Walker or G40(burster MAX-like) available afaik...G40 works for me.

Tip 2: Get a gunner that understands it's not an anti-infantry gun. (if a random guy)

Tip 3: Roll out in good company, even if it's just a pair. Don't be the guy that rushes 150m ahead of mates on the way towards objective. Being a frequent flyer myself, these kind of solo-goers are *exactly* what I'm looking for. (yet, I'm very often "that guy" myself lol...way to impatient at times)

Tip 4: IF you roll without gunner, and have some AA topgun:
FREQUENTLY use third person and turn turret 360 degrees around you to scan the skies for enemies. Be ready to switch seats. As soon as you hear or see an ESF, stop and switch seats. Do NOT shoot at stuff that isn't clearly heading for you. Many times ESFs go for other stuff around you unless fired upon from afar.

IF an ESF goes for you and you have no good cover in range AND are solo, wait til the craft is in decent range. Don't fire too early or you'll waste precious mag ammo on the air around the ESF.
Turn to have front face the ESF before switching to top gun.
Fire and pray.
The thing with the G40 here is - most...one might even say most wise ;) ...ESF pilots will find the sound of the G40s flak hitting their craft so scary, that they think you pose the same threat as a skyguard...wich you do not. As a pilot you almost always instinctively turn and run from heavy flak. That's what's great with the G40...it simulates more heavy flak than it actually is :) . It's decent though, don't get me wrong.
Hopefully the pilot will turn when faced with flak...meaning you get out and repair quickly, before heading for the nearest safe harbour. Rince and repeat if nescessary.

IF you get surprised by an ESF coming up behind you...you are most likely dead. This is why it's so important to be aware of what's around you at all times.
In case of emergency - pop shield...then go BACKWARDS at full speed. ESFs will mostly try to lead their fire ahead of you...and when they fire their first rockets there will be smoke that helps cover your direction change. Odds are not good you'll make it...but they are better this way. You can never outrun an ESF. If you survive the initial attack with enough health though, you can now apply the defense as described above. You will at least have improved your odds.

Those were my looooong 2 cents. I might also be way off on all my tips...but that's what I do at least :)

Oh btw, most tips above for ESF air...Libs are evil and will eat you with a decent crew if you're solo :(
